What are the Benefits of Timber Cladding for Retail Architecture?
Aesthetic Value
One of the most compelling reasons to choose timber cladding is its natural beauty. Timber provides a warm, inviting look that synthetic materials cannot match, creating a unique and memorable visual that enhances the overall comfort of your retail space.
Timber cladding opens up a world of customization, allowing you to tailor the appearance of your retail space to perfectly align with your brand identity and attract customers. With a diverse range of cladding profiles and materials at your disposal, you have the flexibility to achieve any desired aesthetic.
For those seeking a clean and minimalistic look, flat or smooth profiles with straight lines deliver a sense of sophistication and modernity. On the other hand, if you’re aiming for a more contemporary vibe, consider opting for a shadow gap or tongue and groove profile. These options create a uniform façade with subtle shadows, creating visual interest into your retail building and setting you apart from the competition.
Durability
Timber cladding is incredibly durable, especially when treated properly. It can withstand harsh weather conditions, resist decay, and fend off pests. This longevity makes it a cost-effective option for retail spaces that need to maintain their aesthetic appeal over time. At NORclad, we offer timber panels in a variety of species known for their strength and durability, including:
The robust properties of these species ensure that our cladding solutions provide both beauty and resilience.
Sustainability
Timber is a renewable resource with a significantly lower carbon footprint compared to alternative building materials, and its use for cladding can significantly reduce a building’s environmental impact.
Sustainable forestry practices ensure that timber is harvested responsibly, minimizing the environmental impact of logging activities. Forest management techniques such as selective cutting and reforestation help maintain the health and diversity of forest ecosystems, ensuring their long-term viability.
By choosing timber cladding sourced from sustainably managed forests, you’re not only reducing the environmental footprint of your retail building but also supporting greener construction practices. NORclad is committed to supporting these practices by supplying cladding with FSC or PEFC Chain of Custody Certification, ensuring that all our timber products come from legal and sustainable sources.
Cost
Timber cladding is not only aesthetically pleasing but also cost-effective. Its initial installation costs are competitive, and its low maintenance requirements help reduce long-term expenses. Additionally, timber is an excellent insulator, aiding in the regulation of indoor temperatures. This not only creates a comfortable environment but also enhances energy efficiency, making it a smart choice for sustainable architecture.
Can Timber Cladding Be Used for Large Scale Retail Projects?
Absolutely! Timber cladding’s versatility makes it a great fit not only for small boutique stores, but also for large-scale retail projects.
Whether it’s expansive shopping canters or standalone retail giants, timber cladding can be customized to suit any project size and architectural design. Its adaptability and scalability offer tailored solutions for various businesses. Despite the scale of the project, its lightweight nature simplifies the installation process, ensuring efficiency without compromising structural integrity or design flexibility.
Now, let’s delve into some of our most notable projects!
Project 1: High Street Coffee Shop
NORclad provided Accoya cladding fins along with Accoya louvre fins for a Starbucks branch in Staffordshire. The cladding was factory coated with a Teknos translucent coating system. This combination not only offers a sleek, sophisticated appearance but also ensures maximum durability, making it an ideal choice for a commercial building.

Project 2: Eco-friendly Grocery Store
NORclad MicroShades ‘Brunnea’ treated timber is increasingly being specified for ASDA projects nationwide. This pre-treatment protects the timber against rot and fungal decay, ensuring the product’s longevity. Opting for this untreated grade is more cost-effective than the traditional Canadian Western Red Cedar, which is crucial for large-scale retail specifications.
The cladding not only enhances the store’s aesthetic appeal but also highlights its commitment to sustainability. Sourced from certified sustainable forests, the treated timber ensures lasting performance, making the store a standout example of green architecture in the retail sector.
Project 3: Luxury Pet Store
The project required compliance with the BS1186-3 Class 2 specification or higher. Given Sweet Chestnut’s characteristic large knots, we chose to supply a Finger Jointed product. This process resulted in an almost completely clear finish, as depicted in the images below. Over time, the tannins in Sweet Chestnut will start to exude, causing the timber to weather naturally to a silver/grey hue. The cladding’s natural texture and finish contributed to creating a welcoming atmosphere for shoppers.
